Happy World Down Syndrome Day!!

Everything we have is a gift from God. Sometimes the gifts that God gives us helps us to grow and change. I am thankful that God chose me to be Nehemiah’s mother. It is still so strange to me at times how I held my son and never even noticed that he had Down syndrome until his doctor arrived to check on him. I knew nothing about the disability so you can only imagine all the crazy thoughts that ran through my head. I did not know what the road ahead was going to look like, however I had faith that God would take care of us. Immediately I began to search for support groups in my area because i wanted to speak with other parents that could offer advice and give me insight on what to expect on this journey. I was not able to find anything close so I began to read books to gain knowledge about my son’s disability. Knowledge is power! Nehemiah has changed my life in so many ways. I have learned patience and to never give up on anything. I know at time parents can feel overwhelmed defeated, hurt, and sometimes lost trying to raise your child/and or children with a disability. The road isn’t easy, but God never puts more on us than we can handle. I made up my mind after hearing words of encouragement from my mother to be the best mom that I could be to Nehemiah. I utilized every resource that was made available to me. I chose to surround myself and my son with positive and uplifting people. I have instilled in my son that he can accomplish anything that he sets his mind to and I challenge you all to instill the same values in your child. It may take him a little longer to learn things, however he is capable of reaching his goals. On October 14, 2019 at the age of 11 Nehemiah tied his shoe for the first time himself. It doesn’t matter that it took him years, the smile on his face meant everything to me. Some people are often quite surprised when I mention that Nehemiah sings in the church choir, ushers on the usher board, and participates in sports. What did you expect, lol. Down syndrome does not stop anything!

I want all parents of children with disabilities to know that having a child with a disability is not end of the world. God blessed you with your child/ and or children for a reason. God knew you could handle the journey. Stay the course and if at times you ever feel you need someone to talk to, my line is always open 313-355-7610. You got this!!!!

Happy World Down Syndrome Day to every youth and adult with Down Syndrome. You rock!!!!
